WordPress Web Developer

We are looking for an experienced WordPress Web Developer to join our team in Chennai, India. This is a full-time, on-site position (Chennai candidates only, no hybrid/remote option). 

  • The ideal candidate has 4+ years of hands-on WordPress development experience, preferably in a digital marketing agency environment. 
  • You should be skilled in building and maintaining modern WordPress websites, implementing the latest SEO best practices, and developing custom plugins. 
  • Working hours are standard business hours (e.g. Monday to Friday, 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM IST), and we expect a team player who can thrive in a fast-paced setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and Maintain WordPress Websites: Build responsive, user-friendly websites and landing pages in WordPress based on design specs or client requirements. This includes customizing themes and creating custom WordPress plugins to add needed functionality.  Ensure all development follows best practices and coding standards.
  • Implement SEO Best Practices: Optimize websites for search engines (on-page SEO) by structuring content, using proper HTML tags, and ensuring fast load times. Keep websites updated with the latest SEO trends and algorithm changes to maintain high search rankings. This involves adding meta tags, using SEO plugins, and staying informed on new SEO techniques.
  • Work with Design/Marketing Teams: Collaborate closely with designers and digital marketing teams to turn ideas and mockups into functional web pages. If coming from an agency background, you will use your experience to manage multiple client projects and quickly iterate on landing pages or campaign microsites as needed.
  • Website Testing and Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough testing of websites on different browsers and devices to ensure a consistent and high-quality user experience. Identify and fix bugs or layout issues. Perform regular site audits for broken links, usability issues, or anything that could impact user experience or SEO.
  • Performance Optimization: Continuously improve site performance by optimizing images, code, and caching. Aim to meet Google’s PageSpeed and Core Web Vitals guidelines for fast, smooth websites. Ensure plugins and themes are not slowing down the site, and implement fixes if they do.
  • Website Deployment: Manage the deployment of websites from development/staging environments to production (live) servers. Ensure smooth launches by following checklists, backing up sites, and verifying all features work correctly after going live. Coordinate with hosting providers when necessary.
  • Security & Updates: Follow WordPress security best practices to protect sites. Regularly update WordPress core, themes, and plugins to the latest versions to keep the site secure and stable. Implement measures like backup routines, security plugins, managing user roles, and patching vulnerabilities promptly.
  • Troubleshooting: Monitor site health and promptly debug issues that arise (whether code errors, plugin conflicts, or server issues). Provide quick fixes and long-term solutions to keep websites running smoothly with minimal downtime.
  • Stay Up-to-Date: Continuously research and learn about new WordPress features, plugins, and industry trends. The web landscape evolves quickly, so the developer should proactively adopt new tools or practices that could improve our websites (for example, a new SEO plugin or an update to Elementor). Being aware of the latest WordPress updates and trends ensures our sites remain modern and competitive.

Must-Have Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 4+ years of hands-on WordPress development experience. You should have built and launched multiple WordPress websites and be comfortable with both front-end and back-end aspects of WordPress.
  • Agency Background: Proven experience in a digital marketing agency or in a role collaborating with digital marketing teams. You understand the fast-paced agency environment and can juggle multiple projects and deadlines. This experience will help in building marketing-oriented websites and landing pages efficiently.
  • WordPress Expertise: Deep knowledge of WordPress core, themes, and plugins. Ability to develop custom plugins or customize existing ones is required (for example, building a custom functionality when a suitable plugin isn’t available). Familiarity with creating custom post types, modifying theme functions, and using WordPress hooks/actions.
  • Elementor & Page Builders: Strong experience with Elementor (our primary page builder) for designing pages without coding. You should be able to create and adjust page layouts using Elementor’s drag-and-drop interface. Knowledge of other page builders like Divi or Beaver Builder is a bonus, but Elementor is our focus
  • SEO Knowledge: Solid understanding of SEO best practices for websites. You know how to make a WordPress site search-engine-friendly through proper URL structures, meta tags, heading hierarchies, schema markup, etc. You stay informed about SEO changes (e.g., Google algorithm updates) to ensure our sites remain optimized according to the latest standards. Experience with SEO plugins (like Yoast or Rank Math) and techniques for improving site ranking is expected.
  • Web Technologies: Proficiency in front-end technologies (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript) and basic PHP – since customizing WordPress often involves these. You can tweak styles or write a bit of JavaScript when needed to achieve desired functionality. Familiarity with MySQL databases (for WordPress data) and version control (Git) is preferred for deployment workflows.
  • Testing & Debugging: Experience in website testing – including cross-browser testing, responsiveness on various screen sizes, and using tools to debug HTML/CSS issues. Ability to write or follow test cases to ensure everything works as intended before and after launch.
  • Security & Maintenance: Good understanding of website security principles. You know common WordPress vulnerabilities and how to prevent them (e.g., securing login, using security plugins, regular updates). As part of maintenance, you should routinely update software and take backups. Knowledge of website deployment and hosting environments (Apache/Nginx servers, cPanel, etc.) to troubleshoot environment-specific issues is a plus.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent English communication skills (written and spoken). You can explain technical issues in simple terms to team members or clients who may not be technical. Clear writing skills are important for documentation and reporting. Being a good communicator also means you can collaborate effectively with our content writers, SEO specialists, and designers.
  • Work Ethic: A self-motivated, proactive attitude towards work. Ability to work under pressure and handle a dense workload when needed – especially during campaign launches or tight deadlines. We need someone who can manage time well, prioritize tasks, and deliver quality work on schedule, even in a fast-paced environment.
  • Learning Mindset: Ability to independently learn new tools and technologies. If the team adopts a new WordPress plugin, a marketing tech tool, or any emerging technology, you should be eager and able to get up to speed quickly. Essentially, a passion for continuous learning in the web development field.

Preferred Skills (Nice-to-Have)

  • Language: Tamil speaking ability is a plus (optional). Since our office is in Chennai, knowing Tamil can help in informal communication or in understanding content that might be in Tamil. However, it’s not a strict requirement – our primary work language is English.
  • E-commerce: Experience with WooCommerce or other WordPress e-commerce plugins. (Not mandatory, but useful if the role ever involves developing online store sections or payment integrations on WordPress sites.)
  • Analytics & SEO Tools: Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, or SEO auditing tools. This helps in working alongside the SEO team to implement tracking codes, analyze site performance, and fine-tune SEO strategies.
  • Design Sensibility: An eye for design and UX. While this is a developer role, it helps if you can appreciate good design and suggest minor improvements when something in a layout might not be user-friendly. Experience working with designers or using design software (e.g., Figma or Adobe XD) to extract assets/CSS is a bonus.
  • Certifications: Any relevant certifications or courses in WordPress, web development, or SEO (for instance, an SEO certification) can be a plus. They demonstrate your commitment to professional development.
